GETTING HERE

About 76 minutes from Osaka (Abenobashi).
Add it to the route you already have.

Yoshino fits naturally between the cities and landscapes of Kansai — and it is where the trail to Kumano begins. Start with the route closest to your plans.

見出しを1語だけ直しました 「from Osaka」→「from Osaka (Abenobashi)」。

ROUTES BY TRAIN

Choose where you are coming from

Four starting points cover almost every plan. Journey times are station to station and do not include the climb into the town above.

OSAKADirect services

Osaka-Abenobashi → Yoshino

Take a Kintetsu limited express towards Yoshino. Selected departures run direct, making this the simplest route. Abenobashi is beside JR Tennoji — it is not Shin-Osaka or Osaka Station.

KYOTOUsually 1 change

Kyoto → Yoshino

Travel by Kintetsu via Kashihara-jingu-mae, then continue on the Yoshino Line to Yoshino Station.

NARAUsually 2 changes

Kintetsu-Nara → Yoshino

Travel via Yamato-Saidaiji and Kashihara-jingu-mae, then take the Yoshino Line to Yoshino Station.

KANSAI AIRPORTArriving in Japan

Kansai Airport (KIX) → Yoshino

If Yoshino is your first stop after landing, allow a full half-day and expect to change in Osaka. Ask us before you plan an arrival-day climb into the town.

TICKETS — READ THIS BEFORE YOU BUY

Two things about this line surprise almost everyone.

Yoshino is reached on Kintetsu, a private railway. That has two practical consequences that catch visitors out at the ticket machine.

IMPORTANT

Your Japan Rail Pass is not valid on this line.

The Japan Rail Pass and JR regional passes cover JR trains. Kintetsu is a separate, privately owned railway, so you buy an ordinary ticket for this journey even if you hold a rail pass. Budget for it as a separate cost.

要確認Kintetsu's own passes for visitors — which ones cover Yoshino
IMPORTANT

The limited express needs a second ticket.

In Japan a limited express journey is sold as two tickets: a base fare ticket for the distance, plus a limited express ticket that reserves you a specific seat. Buying only the base fare ticket will not let you board. Seats can be reserved in advance.

要確認Online booking in English — available or not

IC cards (ICOCA, Suica, PASMO)

Prepaid IC cards are used across most of Kansai for ordinary trains and buses. Whether they can be used for every leg of the journey to Yoshino, and for the local buses above the station, needs confirming before you rely on one.

要確認IC card coverage on the Yoshino Line and local buses

Cash, cards and ATMs

Yoshino is a small mountain town. Assume that some shops, and possibly some inns, take cash only, and draw money before you leave the city.

要確認Nearest ATM accepting foreign cards · which businesses take cards

THE LAST SERVICES

The mountain empties in the early evening.

This is the timetable that decides your trip. Day visitors leave because they have to. If you want the street at dusk, the mountain before breakfast and the view from the ridge at first light, the last departures are the reason you stay the night.

ONCE YOU ARE HERE

The station is only the beginning.

Yoshino Station is at the foot of the mountain. The town above includes long slopes, steps and narrow roads, so plan your luggage and footwear before you arrive.

YOUR FIRST HOUR

Bags, information and the things you will look for first.

Where to leave your bags

The town is uphill. Most visitors would rather climb without a suitcase, and most inns will take a delivery.

WHERE YOSHINO LEADS

Yoshino is not the end of a route. It is the start of one.

The Omine Okugake trail — the pilgrimage route that connects Yoshino to Kumano across the Kii mountains — begins here. If you are travelling Japan for two or three weeks, Yoshino is not a detour. It is the join between the cities you have already planned and the mountains south of them.

Towards Ise

Continue east by Kintetsu towards Ise and the coast. Several walking-tour operators already end their Japanese itineraries at Ise, and Yoshino sits on the way in.

要確認Connections, changes and journey time
